The World's First Huanghuali Cello
16th - 28th January 2026
Liang Yi Museum is delighted to present an unprecedented instrument—the world's first huanghuali cello, in collaboration with violin dealer J & A Beare and Premiere Performances Hong Kong. From 16th to 28th January 2026, the exhibition will centre on the final stages of the cello's construction by luthier Robert Brewer Young, Head of Scientific Research and Conservation at J & A Beare. Featured alongside are rare historic violins by Antonio Stradivari and Giuseppe Guarneri del Gesù, as well as precious huanghuali objects from the Museum's collection.
Aside from this, the workshop series “The Five Senses of the Violinmaker” further dives into the synthesis of Eastern and Western craft traditions, exploring the physical processes and craftsmanship behind the world of the huanghuali cello. Meanwhile, “Secrets of Stradivari", an illuminating talk on Stradivari violins by Young accompanied by an instrument demonstration by violinist Angela Chan opens this two-week programme, while an enchanting salon featuring violinist/violist Yura Lee further merges the worlds of music and craftsmanship.
We've reached the maximum capacity of registrations for our workshops and events. However, the exhibition from 16th to 28th January is still open to the public—you are invited to come and feel the cello's prized material, woody fragrance, and dulcet melodies.
