As part of the programming for our current exhibition The Blue Road: Mastercrafts from Persia, the April edition of Liang Yi Talks will be co-presented by Dr. Marco Caboara and Mr. Peter Geldart. The first half of the lecture will be given by Dr. Marco Caboara, who will focus on European maps of the overland routes to Asia from the 16th to the 19th centuries. He will also outline the historical origin of European maps of Asia and give audiences an overview of how these maps were visualised by Western missionaries and explorers. The emphasis of the second half of the lecture is on sea charts. Collector Mr. Peter Geldartwill give a high-level overview of the history of sea charts and the development of cartography of sea charts of Asia. Dr. Marco Caboara received his Ph.D. from the University of Washington, Seattle with a study of the linguistic features of Classical Chinese Bamboo Manuscripts. His main research interests include historical cartography, classical Chinese phonology and syntax, Chinese manuscript studies, and modern European History.
